October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Summit Oral Care • Oct 13, 2021

Every October, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) celebrates National Dental Hygiene Month to raise awareness about strong oral health and celebrate the care our hygienists provide!

We thank them for their inner-strength, endurance, and dedication!

Dental hygienists work alongside dentists to prevent oral health issues, such as cavities and gum disease. Over time, food and drinks cause a film to develop over your teeth called plaque. Too much plaque will erode the enamel, and cause tooth decay and cavities. Eventually, plaque will harden into a substance called tartar, which can only be removed with a special instrument used by a hygienist.

It is important to see a dental hygienist for cleanings twice a year, or every six months. During your visit, the hygienist will clean your teeth and gums to remove plaque and tartar while educating you on ways to improve your oral health. Hygienists guide you through specific brushing techniques, and educate you on cavity causing foods to avoid and other factors that could damage your oral health.

They are very well educated on the latest oral hygiene products from floss and flossers to picks, toothbrushes, interdentals and more.

Visiting your hygienist regularly and staying on top of your oral care will help prevent small problems from escalating into larger problems that are more costly and complicated to repair. A hygienist’s advice and attention helps you achieve the smile you always wanted.
